PERIYAR E.V. RAMAYANA NAICKAR: A Dalit Philosopher and Revolutionary

Periyar, the noted philosophers and the revolutionary, was born in Erode in Tamilnadu on 17-09-1879 in a Naickar family. There was perfect harmony between his thoughts, words and deeds. It is necessary to study the conditions in Tamilnadu at the eve of birth of Periyar. Briefly, a miniscule minority of Brahmans had distorted religion, law and order, social and economic life to make themselves the masters of the land. Religion ruled the life of the people from birth to death and rationalism was brutally suppressed. Vamashrama Dharma, the enemy of humanism was enthroned and caste consciousness divided society into countless groups, which led to the fighting for power and position. Inhuman laws of Manu were made the laws of the land and inhumanity was let loose on the people (David, 1996: 8-9). The Shudras were forbidden to seek education. Due to this they were made physical slaves of society. Rituals governed the life from birth to death and Brahmans lived on the fat of the land. Brahman...

Conflict between Ambedakar and Gandhi on Dalit's Right

Ambedkar had no faith in the Gandhian idea of a ‘Change of heart” among caste Hindus, and indeed nether Gandhi nor the congress approved of these nonviolent efforts to adapt the Gandhian methods to their needs. He saw the Satyagrahas however, as necessary efforts to unify the untouchables and make them conscious of their lack of rights.  The second event was Ambedkar’s open class with Gandhi during the second round table conference (1931) on the issue of reservations or separate electorates for the untouchables. Gandhiji had claims to the leadership of the untouchables, which Ambedkar opposed. No unanimous agreement was possible; no agreed formula could be evolved as regards the representation. And the Second Round Table Conference ended without any decision. Gandhiji on return to India had to face a severe crisis. Mass arrests were made and repression followed. Gandhiji was also arrested.  In August 1932, Ramsay MacDonald published his “Communal Award” giving separate ...

Dalit Panther Movement

The Dalit Panther Movement was formed in 1972, when the Dalit youths came forward and took up the task of bringing all the Dalits on to one single platform and mobilizes them for the struggle for their civil rights and justice. It demonstrated that the lower castes were not willing to accept indignities and their worst conditions without protest. To Panthers, Dalit meant members of Scheduled Castes and Tribes, Neo-Buddhists, the working class, the landless and poor farmer, women, and all those who are being exploited politically, weaker economically, and neglected in the name of religion. The most crucial factor for the rise of the Dalit Panther Movement was the repression and terror under which the oppressed Scheduled Castes continued to live in the rural areas. The action plan for the Dalit Panthers was incorporated into the manifesto which consisted of 18 demands pertaining to the emancipation of Dalits. The manifesto reflected the enthusiasm of the Dalits to mobilize the poor masse...

Using History to Create a Dalit Identity

According to Phule, the most important stories of popular Hindu mythology were actually the distorted reflections of the ancient struggle between the Brahmans, who originally came from some region beyond the river Indus, and the Kshatriyas, the original inhabitants of this land, who came to be called kshatriyas by the invaders because they lived in ‘kshetras’ or fields. Phule explained how the mythological accounts of the ten incarnations of Vishnu and Parshuram’s extirpation of the kshatriyas from the earth were deliberately distorted versions of the actual historical conquest and defeat of the natives. Phule devotes the first nine chapters of Slavery to reconstructing the past and reinterpreting the 10 incarnations of Vishnu in historical terms (Phadke, 1979). According to Phule, the Aryans first attacked in small boats that moved in water like fish or ‘masa’ and hence the nickname of the first Aryan leader to attack the Kshatriyas came to be ‘Matsya’ (the first incarnation of Vishnu...
