 Islamic and Muslim Influence on Nehru Jawaharlal Nehru was a Kashmiri Brahmin (Hindu Pandit) by birth and family background. Claims that he or his immediate family were Muslim, or that his lineage converted from Islam in recent generations, are false and have been repeatedly debunked. His parents were Motilal Nehru and Swarup Rani; the family name “Nehru” traces to an ancestor (Raj Kaul) associated with a canal (nahar), and he identified with Hindu cultural inheritance while remaining largely agnostic/secular in personal belief. Islamic influence on Nehru was cultural-historical and political, not personal or doctrinal.
